Learn to use the hjkl keys for navigation in Vim

Inserting the following in your .vimrc file – or anywhere else that somehow gets run when you launch Vim – will make your system’s bell ring when you use the arrow keys in navigation mode.

It is fairly basic, but I have nonetheless found it useful.

I’m a bachelor! And a Bachelor of Science, too!

July 7th, 2010 Filip No comments

I just received my diploma in the mail (the non-electronic kind, even). Apparently, all the *cough* hard work during the last three years has paid off and I’m now allowed to refer to myself as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering (Software). What’s up with the parentheses? I have no idea, perhaps it just has to be that way – although Software Engineering would have made more sense if you ask me.

So what am I doing now? Well, I’m enjoying 10 glorious weeks of vacation! And working, because, well, I can’t just sit around and play games, watch movies, and read fiction all day, can I? Actually, I can, but I’m (sadly) not paid to do that. Maybe sometime in the future.

After my vacation, that is, in the beginning of September, it’s time to get started on my master’s degree. Even though I really like my vacation, I’m itching to get started again – the topic of the first semester in the master’s program is Internet Technologies, something I’m very interested in. It should be fun! And after that, it’ll be time to write a thesis and before I know it, I’ll be through and ready to get a full-time job in the real world. I can’t wait!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have bugs to squash and dragons to kill.

I have a blog?!

March 21st, 2010 Filip No comments

It has come to my attention that I have a blog. Apparently, I’m expected to update said blog with interesting and/or relevant posts every once in a while. But I haven’t, which is a shame because a lot has happened in the many months that have passed since my last post. Hopefully I can get around to that in the coming weeks.

So what has happened? Well, I’ve grown to dislike Seam immensely. I’m not very fond of Java anymore. Ruby (on Rails) has caught my interest. I’ve acquired a new server and chosen Arch Linux as my new favorite GNU/Linux distribution. And lots more that I probably won’t have the time or desire to tell you about.

So stay tuned – or just point your feed reader towards the RSS feed if you’re lazy.

Still alive!

After two months without posts, I’m back! I’ve been busy at the university – exams and stuff – and at work. Now, however, I have about 9 weeks of vacation, which is great.

Look for new posts soon about exciting topics such as how to backup your server to Amazon S3 using Jungle Disk, why knowing the MPM mode of your Apache HTTPD server is very important, and finally, why I’ve chosen to abandon Apache Tapestry in favor of JBoss Seam.

Back from vacation!

April 21st, 2009 Filip No comments

I’m back in Aalborg – and have been for a few days now – after a lovely Easter with my family. Incidentally, that’s also why I haven’t been blogging the past three weeks – there has simply been too much to do. For example, I watched Fast & Furious, Monsters vs Aliens, and Watchmen in three days. Yup, I actually went to the movies for three days in a row.

I also acquired Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Xbox 360, which I have already beaten on the Sith Warrior (normal) difficulty. The game is the first canonical Star Wars game and takes place between Episode 3 and Episode 4. But that’s all I’ll say about that. It’s a lot of fun, although short, and I highly recommend it, even though it’s quite frustrating at times. But you’ll forget all about that once you get to smash Storm Troopers into walls or throw explosive canisters in their faces!

I’ve also gotten myself a pair of Rollerblade Crossfire 360 – that’s rollerblades, duh. (By the way, why must sites like that always use so much Flash?? It’s annoying!) They’re great, and I love having rollerblades again. I’ll have to get used to it again, though, as I haven’t skated in like three years. Luckily, there’s a rollerblading club in Aalborg, so I should be able to find someone to skate with.

Finally, you really need to check out my dad’s WordPress blog. He’s translating plugins and themes at a breakneck pace and learning PHP etc. as he goes along as well! My dad is super cool. :D The blog’s in Danish, but take a look anyway.

Google introduces CADIE (and other 0401 jokes)

April 1st, 2009 Filip No comments

Yesterday, at March 31st, 2009 11:59:59 pm, Google, Inc. announced its Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity, also known as CADIE.

Less than a day after, CADIE has already had a profound impact on several Google services.

More information can be found at CADIE’s homepage, that – according to Google – was made by CADIE itself: “Earlier today, for instance, CADIE deduced from a quick scan of the visual segment of the social web a set of online design principles from which she derived this intriguing homepage.”

CADIE also has its own YouTube page featuring – among other things – pandas.

In other news, Google Australia has introduced the gBall™, and a build of Internet Explorer 8.1 has been leaked. For a list of game-related April Fool’s jokes, head over to Kotaku.com.

A nice Bash prompt

March 23rd, 2009 Filip No comments

I always knew you could change your prompt in Bash. I just never bothered to do it. I guess I didn’t know what I was missing.

Most – if not all – people who use GNU/Linux know the Bash prompt. Logged in as the user fsa on the host hamlet, my default prompt would be something like [fsa@hamlet ~]$ . And it still is. But it’s coloured now, and it puts some nice information into the title of my xterm – or in this case, my Cygwin Bash Shell because I haven’t gotten around to installing CentOS yet.

This blog is now OpenID enabled

March 10th, 2009 Filip 3 comments

I’ve come across OpenID before but never really looked into it. Until today, that is. Now, I’ve got myself an OpenID and visitors will be able to comment using their OpenID on this blog.

I’m using the OpenID WordPress plugin for this, and it works great. It even allows you to use your blog as an OpenID provider, but I chose to use myOpenID instead. Now I just need to figure out how to claim my blog with it.

Getting settled

March 8th, 2009 Filip 1 comment

I’ve spent the last three or so hours setting up this blog. I’ve installed a bunch of plugins and found myself a nice theme. I’m impressed with how easy it has been with WordPress 2.7 – I’ve barely had to SSH into my server to make changes. Very good. The new user interface is a joy to work with as well.

Kudos to my dad for recommending a lot of plugins and helping out when I couldn’t figure out stuff like adding the time to my posts. And I’m supposed to be the IT guy, hehe.

Thanks dad. :)
